What to do next?

These projects typically have so many directions and possibilities; the next action often seems cluttered with variables.

We routinely work with scientists, inventors and Ph.D.’s. We have developed a sense for what works and what does not work. This is experience. Most inventors assume that if they are brilliant enough to create a brilliant invention - they are brilliant enough to commercialize the invention. In most cases, this process is an art as much as a science. The process is not as straightforward as it may appear. Our experience has made us experts in this process. Regardless of the knowledge base from which you are working, the knowledge to develop a new invention and structure the project for commercialization is a separate skill.

One action not recommended - is to allow the invention to languish in development. Once the clock begins on a patent, do not let your property age, its value will decline by age and competitive threats. It is not unusual to lose 1/4 to 1/3 of the patent period merely in the commercialization stage, only to be reminded by potential investors that the patent is aging and you may be offered less due to its age.

Our advice is that unless you have a clear direction - your best choice is to launch a technical or marketing investigation to review the technology, sources, potential partners, competitive threats, and market directions already in the arenas related to your invention.
